Generalized Blockmodeling

چکیده
The goal of blockmodeling is to reduce a large, potentially incoherent network to a smaller comprehensible structure that can be interpreted more readily. In the paper we present some basic ideas and developments in this area. 1 Basic Notions 1.1 Network Let E = {X1, X2, . . . , Xn} be a finite set of units or units. The units are related by binary relations Rt ⊆ E × E, t = 1, . . . , r, r ≥ 1 which determine a network N = (E,R1, R2, . . . , Rr) In the following we restrict our discussion to a single relation R described by a corresponding binary matrix R = [rij]n×n where rij = { 1 XiRXj 0 otherwise In some applications rij can be a nonnegative real number expressing the strength of the relation R between units Xi and Xj. 1.1.1 Example: Student Government In Table 1 and Figure 1 the Student Government network is presented. It consists of communication interactions among twelve members and advisors of the Student Government at the University in Ljubljana (Tina Hlebec, 1993). The results of the measurement are not real interactions among actors but cognition about communication interactions. Data were collected with face to face interviews. Interviews were conducted in May 1992. Communication flow among actors was identified by the following question: Of the members and advisors of the Student Government, whom do you (most often) talk with? The content of the communication flow was limited to the matters of the Student Government. The time frame was also defined: the question was referred to the six months period. One respondent refused to cooperate in the experiment. As he was not considered in the analysis, the network consists of eleven actors. Generalized blockmodeling of valued networks
The paper presents several approaches to generalized blockmodeling of valued networks, where values of the ties are assumed to be measured on at least interval scale. The first approach is a straightforward generalization of the generalized blockmodeling of binary networks [Doreian, P., Batagelj, V., Ferligoj, A., 2005. Generalized Blockmodeling. Cambridge University Press, New York.] to valued...
متن کامل1 Some Open Problem Sets for Generalized Blockmodeling
This paper provides an introduction to the blockmodeling problem of how to cluster networks, based solely on the structural information contained in the relational ties, and a brief overview of generalized blockmodeling as an approach for solving this problem. Following a formal statement of the core of generalized blockmodeling, a listing of the advantages of adopting this approach to partitio...
متن کاملGeneralized Blockmodeling with Pajek
One goal of blockmodeling is to reduce a large, potentially incoherent network to a smaller comprehensible structure that can be interpreted more readily. Batagelj, Doreian, and Ferligoj developed a generalized approach to blockmodeling and methods where a set of observed relations are fitted to a pre-specified blockmodel. In the paper this generalized blockmodeling approach as implemented in p...
متن کاملGeneralized blockmodeling of sparse networks
The paper starts with an observation that the blockmodeling of relatively sparse binary networks (where we also expect sparse non-null blocks) is problematic. The use of regular equivalence often results in almost all units being classified in the same equivalence class, while using structural equivalence (binary version) only finds very small complete blocks. Two possible ways of blockmodeling...
متن کاملCorrigendum to "Generalized blockmodeling of two-mode network data" [Social Networks 26 (2004) 29-53]
The authors regret that in the above published paper the following error occurred. Martin Everett has kindly drawn our attention to an omission in the above manuscript in which we proposed extending generalized blockmodeling to two-mode data. The idea of simultaneously partitioning the rows and columns of a two-mode data structure was proposed in “Borgatti, S., Everett, M.G., 1992. Regular bloc...
متن کاملGeneralized blockmodeling of two-mode network data
We extend the direct approach for blockmodeling one-mode data to two-mode data. The key idea in this development is that the rows and columns are partitioned simultaneously but in different ways. Many (but not all) of the generalized block types can be mobilized in blockmodeling two-mode network data. These methods were applied to some ‘voting’ data from the 2000–2001 term of the Supreme Court ...
